Obituary

Kathryn Madelene was born on July 24, 1942 to Madelene (Persyn) and Delbert Haener in Portland, Oregon.  She joined older   sister Marie Louise with four siblings following: Delbert, Richard, Mike and Madelene.  Along with their parents, Aunt Marie Persyn helped raise Kathy and her siblings on the family farm.  Kathy was immensely proud of her farming roots, the home and swimming pool she helped her family build on their productive farm on Ehlen Road near the small community of Donald. Oregon.

She attended St. Luke’s Grade School in Woodburn and Mt. Angel Girls Academy where she played basketball, piano and participated in theater.  She graduated in 1965 from the University of Portland with a Liberal Arts degree.  Kathy met Christian Burnside at a college dance, kept in touch while he served 4 years in the Air Force, and began their courtship upon his discharge.  They married on November 26, 1966 at St. Luke’s Catholic Church in Woodburn.  Their 3 children followed in quick succession, and they built their family home on acreage outside of Sherwood, near the Tualatin River.

Kathy was a homemaker and actively involved in her children’s    activities.  She enjoyed sewing, elaborate cake decorating and tending to her flower garden.  Kathy and her children spent summers working on the family farm.  Her teaching Career began at schools in Glendale, Oregon and Independence, Oregon and she retired as a full-time    Substitute Teacher at Sherwood High School.

After retirement, Kathy continued her love of crafting.  Her wood hand-painted Christmas scenes were well-known and viewed by many.  She and Chris traveled the Western States and Kathy loved spoiling the grandchildren.  She and Chris purchased their dream home on a bluff in Waldport, Oregon and spent mornings and        evenings enjoying their beautiful ocean view.

Kathy was an active church member at St. Anthony’s in Tigard, St. Francis in Sherwood and Sacred Heart in Newport.  Her later  years were spent volunteering as a Reader, Eucharistic Minister,    and Committee Chair for the annual Sacred Heart Church Auction.

After a decades-long, valiant battle with cancer and rheumatoid arthritis, Kathy peacefully passed away surrounded by her immediate family due to a strict quarantine because of the Covid pandemic.     We are thankful for the many months she spent well-cared for at Fieldstone Cornell Landing Assisted Living in Portland.

Kathy is survived by her husband of 53 years, Chris, and her three children: Mary (David) Anderson, Christina (Jano) Burnside, and   John (Kari) Burnside.  She will be missed by her grandchildren:    Victoria (Ashton) De Filippis, Elizabeth, Madelene and Kathryn       Anderson, Elenae Jgerenaia, and Jack & Adam Burnside plus         great-grandson Darson.  She also leaves behind her 5 siblings, in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews.
