Richard Monteith, 87

Father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor, Richard (Dick) Charles Monteith passed away peacefully in Newport, Oregon, on July 5, 2019, with his children at his side. He was born April 27, 1932, to Merle and Sarah Hazel Monteith in Frankfurt, Kansas. Richard graduated from Kansas State University with a bachelor in Mechanical Engineering. He served in the US Army for two years in Hawaii, and then pursued a career in government service.

Dick was an avid outdoorsman, taking his family on camping trips to Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, and Mexico. After a career with the US Forest Service in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and Portland, Oregon, he retired to the Oregon Coast, where he pursued numerous hobbies, including ocean fishing, trap shooting, and cribbage. Dick was a talented woodworker who loved solving design problems and working through the details to create beautiful furniture for friends and family. When he could no longer make large pieces, Dick turned to making small, highly detailed wooden boxes and objects. He was also a good shot, competing frequently at trap shooting events. He said he liked trap shooting because it was a sport in which he could still be competitive with someone half his age.

He is survived by his daughter Nancy Monteith of Salt Lake City, Utah, his son Michael Monteith of Burley, Idaho, and his granddaughter Kylie Monteith, of Burley, Idaho.

His sense of humor and generosity will be greatly missed. The family is especially grateful to beloved neighbors Al and Beverly Green and the staff at Aging Wisely whose support enabled Dick to live independently in his own home.
