| James Leroy Carpenter was born to Berta Love Floyd and James Leroy Carpenter on April 26, 1935 in Fort Smith, Arkansas and passed away on December 21, 2009 in Newport, Oregon, at the age of 74. James graduated Bend High School. He began his career in grocery retail sales by first working for Wagner’s Market located in Bend, Oregon; and later with the Franz Bread Company in Redmond, OR. James then opened his first market, Thrifty Food Center, in Redmond, wherein he opened a second location, then a third in Tumelo, OR. In 1976, James relocated in Tillamook, opening the Tillamook Market which he operated for about three years. In 1979, he acquired Toledo Food Fair which has remained as his family business for thirty years. He also owned South Beach Market. James loved auctions and in April, 1986, James went to an auction by invitation of his friend in Waldport, which became a blind date with Brenda. One month later, May 23, 1986, they were married, a loving marriage which remained until his passing. James loved bowling and fishing; however, his was fanatic about baseball and the Atlanta Braves was his favorite team. A special time for James and Brenda was their get-a-way to Reno where Jim liked to gamble at Fitzgeralds Casino and Hotel. He was a member of the Eagles in Toledo for a few years and a 28 year member of Elks BPOE #1664, in Toledo. Jim was a devoted life-long member of the Episcopal Church and perish member of the St. John’s Episcopal Church in Toledo. He is survived by his loving wife Brenda Joyce (Wagner) Carpenter; children, Michael L. Carpenter, Debbie S. Corwin, Tori D. Carter, Miriam D. Proud, and Henry L. Faiman; grandchildren, Shylo K. Walker, Dusty K. Corwin, and Kendra L.M. Faiman; brothers, John and Donald Carpenter; sister, Betty Troxel; ten grandchildren, and many friends. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 30, 2009 at 1:00PM at St. John’s Episcopal Church, located at 110 NE Alder Street, Toledo, OR. |
